“The Red Door of Truth”

“The Red Door of Truth”—Why We Blower Door Test Every Home We Build?

If you walk onto one of our job sites, you might see something that looks a bit like a movie prop. It’s a large red fabric frame fitted into a door opening, with a high-powered fan connected to a manometer.

To the average person, it may look like a strange science experiment. To us, it is one of the most important moments of the construction process. It’s called a Blower Door Test, and if you’re planning on renovating or building a home, it is the one “test” your builder should never skip!

What Exactly is a Blower Door Test?

In simple terms, a Blower Door Test measures the “airtightness” of a building.

The fan can be used to pull air in or out of the house, de-pressurizing or pressurizing the interior. That’s when the outside or inside air tries to force its way through every tiny crack, gap, and unsealed wire penetration in the building’s envelope (the shell of the house). The computer then measures how much air your home is leaking. We measure this in ACH50 (Air Changes per Hour at 50 Pascals of pressure).

  • A standard “code-built” home might have leakage rates over 3.0 ACH50
  • A Passive House, the gold standard of energy efficiency, must be 0.6 ACH50 or lower.

That is a massive difference in precision. It’s the difference between a house that “leaks” its expensive conditioned air every hour and a house that holds it in like a high-end thermos.

Why Do We Insist on Testing Every Home?

Whether it’s a deep renovation or a new custom build, navigating the complexities of a home’s building envelope requires precision. We are proud to have a highly trained team on site, but we don’t rely on guesswork. We don’t just trust; we verify that your home will perform as designed.

Comfort and the “Ghost Draft”

Have you ever sat in a home and felt a chill on your neck, even though the thermostat says 21°C (70°F)? That’s a draft. By blower door testing, we find and seal those leaks, ensuring your home stays at a consistent, comfortable temperature from the floorboards to the ceiling.

Indoor Air Quality (The Healthy Home)

In a “leaky” house, the air you breathe is being pulled through your walls, floors and ceiling, filtering through fibreglass insulation, dust, bugs, and potentially mold. Our homes are sealed tight and then “allowed to breathe” using an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) or HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator). This means you’re controlling the air entering and exiting your home and are breathing filtered, fresh air 24/7.

Protecting the Structure

This is the part most builders don’t talk about. When air leaks out of a house, it carries moisture (humidity) with it. In the winter, that warm, moist air hits the cold sheeting inside your walls and eventually turns into water. Over time, that leads to rot and mold. A high-performance airtight seal isn’t just for energy—it’s for the longevity of your investment.

The Science of “Building It Right”

When you choose to renovate or build a high-performance home with us, you aren’t just buying a design and pretty finishes; you’re buying a healthy, durable, and intentionally built home–a home that looks good, feels good, and can last for generations.

It is likely the largest investment you will ever make. It is an act of trust–you are trusting us to handle the complex building science of today’s buildings so that you don’t have to worry.

We run blower door tests because we take your trust seriously. Our goal is to hand you the keys to a home where high performance isn’t just a promise we made, but a standard we verified and proved.
