5 Signs Your House Is Wasting Energy

Is Your Home Speaking to You? Signs Your home is not only Wasting Energy, but also not performing the way it should.

Most homeowners think of energy waste as a “utility bill problem”. But as a high-performance builder, we see it differently. Energy waste is a symptom. It’s your home telling you that its building envelope, the multi-layer assembly that protects you from the elements, is failing to do its job.

Whether you live in a heritage home or a brand-new home, there are subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs that your home is working way harder than it should. Here is what we look for when we evaluate the efficiency of a building, and why these signs matter:

Drafts and Cold Spots

Have you ever walked past a window or a power outlet in the winter and felt a sudden chill? Perhaps notice frost near a corner or baseboard?

This is likely due to air leakage in the “Air control layer”. Homes are a multitude of materials put together to create a house as a system. Tiny gaps around window and door frames, between wall plates and floors, at joist ends, and at electrical penetrations are notorious for air leakage. If you’re feeling a breeze, your home is telling you that there is an issue with the “Air control layer”.

We eliminate these drafty problem areas by ensuring our air control layer is flawless from day one. We’re able to build truly airtight homes by prioritizing early design, thoughtful sequencing of control layers during construction, and providing proper training for our team.

Windows That “Sweat” (Condensation)

If you notice moisture on the inside of your glass, your windows are sounding an alarm.

This typically points to two main issues. First, the indoor humidity may be too high—condensation happens when warm, moist indoor air hits a cooler surface. Second, in many traditional homes, the windows are the weakest link in the “thermal control layer”. This isn’t just an energy efficiency issue; it’s a potential health and structural concern. Constant moisture around windows can quickly lead to mold growth and, over the long term, cause hidden structural damage within the wall framing.

We minimize the risk of our clients experiencing window “sweat” by addressing both sides of the equation: educating homeowners on the importance of managing indoor humidity levels, and pairing that with properly installed, high-performance windows.

The “On-Again, Off-Again” Furnace

Does your HVAC system feel like it’s constantly cycling on and off? If your furnace kicks in every 15 minutes, it’s a sign that your home has poor insulation levels (a weak “Thermal control layer”) and/or high levels of air leakage (a compromised “Air control layer”). Furthermore, it could mean the system itself wasn’t properly designed or installed for the house.

A home should act like a high-end thermos. Once it is heated or cooled, it should maintain that temperature for long periods without constant mechanical help. If your house loses its temperature the moment the system stops running, it is wasting energy.

Having well-executed “Thermal and Air control layers” is critical, but the HVAC system must be engineered to match. We perform an energy model to understand the gains and losses; we have professional spec equipment and provide installation designs for all of our projects.

Dust That Never Goes Away

This is the sign most people miss because dust is supposed to be a normal occurrence. If you find yourself dusting every few days or every day, your home likely has an air leakage (an “air control layer” issue).

When air is allowed to enter and exit the home through tiny gaps and cracks in the building envelope, it carries dust and pollutants with it. When we can properly execute the home’s “air control layer”, we can control the air entering and exiting the home through the home’s filtered HVAC system.

Why “Good Enough” Isn’t Good Enough Anymore

In the past, we threw a bigger furnace at a leaky house to keep it warm. We thought wiping water off our windows was just a normal part of winter, or that a furnace constantly kicking in just meant it was really cold out. We even accepted that living in the country meant dust was to be expected.

The good news is, we don’t have to accept these issues anymore.

High-performance building practices eliminate these old standards. If you are ready to stop wasting energy and want to live in a healthier, more comfortable home, we can show you exactly how our custom builds change the way you live. Let’s connect.
